Teviot Rangers Summer Tournament 2002

Squad: Adam Mierzynski, Charlie Hopwood, Jack Neal, Adam Smith, Jim Hirsch, Adam Dunsdon, George Dunn, Ediz Fahri & Sidi Sidibe.

This was the first outing for the Under 8's as Lee United. We had 7 players from our old squad plus invited players on he day of Adam Smith & Sidi Sidibe. Considering some of the boys had never played together, and the absence of training over the previous few weeks, the squad did exceptionally well to progress through the league stage and into the quarter-finals. An easy game saw the boys win 2-0 against Abbeywood 'B' with goals from George (penalty) and Charlie. Into the Semi-final and we came up against Griffin Sports. We had played these during last season but there was a marked improvement in their play. A hard game ended with a 1-0 win, with a goal from Charlie taking us to the our first final as Lee United.

Here we came up against Beacons FC. The players knew each other from our games during the season & it was obvious Beacons were up to get revenge for the last day of the season where we won against both of their teams 3-0 & 2-0. The final was extended to 7 minutes each way and the pitch became a battlefield as Beacons players attacked the ball. Their physical style of play was something we had not come up against all day, and a goal just before half time saw us into the break losing 1-0. The first half had lasted 11 minutes, as the referee was constantly stopping the game. The second half followed the same pattern and Beacons proved too physical for us on the day. The final ended with us losing 1-0 and the boys were understandably upset. They had played so well all day, and at the end it was brute strength that had beaten them. Well done to Beacons on their success, and well done to all the players in the Lee squad, who could not have given anything more. Ediz won the player of the tournament award, and we wish him every success in whatever he does next season.

There were many other bonuses on the day. The players and parents attitudes were great, the play was at times brilliant, the boys all played together as a team, and finally Adam Smith agreed to be our third Adam at Lee United under 9's for next season.
